All things legendary carry with them an aura of awe and brilliance unlike those of the ordinary varieties of things or a living being. Even those things which if brought forth somehow in real life may not justify that same legendary appeal that people sometimes give in their total absence from the scene. This is especially true of men and animals. In the cases of horses that are extinct it becomes very much an area of speculation and wild rumors. The Thessalian Horse has it all and to some extent true too for they were ridden by the brave and legendary cavalry horsemen during the time of ancient Greece.
Since very little is known about them archeologists and equine experts and other experts study them with great care and through the artifacts dug up or obtained from the drawings and carvings of the Tessalian Horses on coins and other ancient tools. It was during Alexander’s time that these legendary horses became known for its war efforts and extraordinary skills displayed in the battlefield. The Thesssalian breed was believed to be found in the region surrounding Thessaly in Greece. And the cavalry men during Alexander’s time were called Thessalian horsemen due to the very fact that they were the ones who were constantly riding these horses in the battlefield. During the conquest of Turkey, the Thessalian and their horse displayed extraordinary bravery and gallantry such that they were mostly on guard on the left flank of Alexander’s army.
The Thessalian Horse is known for its endurance and light and easy to handle. It was perhaps due to their adaptability that they were promoted from light cavalry horse to heavy stock cavalry during the time of Alexander. It is nearly extinct although efforts are on to obtain similar types of breed by crossing with Anglo-Arab and Lipitsa bred.
