Man is by nature a commercial creature and he sees or tries to see value in all things natural and man made. At times he moulds and modifies these natural and man made things, artifacts or living beings, to bring out the best value in them. One such breed in the equine breed is the Thoroughbred Horse. This is the type of horse that is perhaps the most sought after breed of horses in the whole world for the sole purpose of racing and other sports arena for money spinning commercial ventures. It is revealed that the Thoroughbred Horses are the most registered among the horse breeds. In North America alone there is mind boggling 34000 breeds registered every year. In other words the breed itself has become a large business running into a $34 billion industry. It has created jobs of around 470000 and has given rise to revenue potential areas as varied as welfare hospitals for the breed to betting and gambling centers.
Thoroughbred Horse was developed first in 17th and 18th century in England where the breeders crossed the native mares with those of Arabian Stallions. Later over the period these cross bred were successively crossed with a wide ranging variety of other horses around the world. Even to this day crossing is done to produce a better variety than the Thoroughbred Horse. Whatever be the true picture of the various on going experimentations, the Thoroughbred Horses succeeded like no other horses in the world. They were the most perfect creature for competitive races where huge amounts of money were involved. Some where used in show jumping, combined training, dressage, polo and fox hunting.
Thoroughbreds move or race with the maximum exertion and this of course takes toll on their health too. The healths of these horses are not good and they have several internal complaints. They also have short span of life. Perhaps Man has been too selfish in producing an animal that have lesser stamina and acts more like a machine. The heights of these horses are on the average 15.2 to 17 hands. Color is bay, brown, chestnut, black or gray. White is very rare.
