Developed from Estonian native horse, the Tori is originally from Estonia. Tori Horse (Toric) is the international breed name for this variety of horses, and the local breed name is Tori hobune.
The history of Tori horse can be traced back to 1890. From 1890 to 1950, this breed was developed at Tori stud in Estonia. This breed was developed by cross-mating native Estonian mares with Europian halfbred stallions. This class was primarily created by a stallion called Hetman, whose sire was Stewart, a crossbreed of a Norfolk Trotter and an Anglo-Norman mare. The Tori breed was produced by the procreation of Hetman and his sons.
For a Tori, the basic hair pigmentation is black, light black, chestnut, liver chestnut, light chestnut, dark chestnut, Isabel, grey, palomino and bay. The intermixing of white hair within pigmented region is strawberry and grey.
Their relative performance when compared to standard breed Halfbred is commendable. Their fertility rate, adaptability in dressage and pulling power are really high. When compared, in areas like handling ease, age at sexual maturity, daily gain, speed in gallop, adaptability in military, and adaptability in jumping is equal to standard breed Halfbred.
The modern Tori is apparently a harness horse with a clean and solid build. The Tori horse has large to medium sized head with a fleshy neck with medium length, withers of average height, a long and flat back, and is well muscled with a loin and a croup which is broad. The Tori has an exceptionally broad and deep chest, and clean and well set limbs. Adult Tori (male/female) are 162 (approx) cm in height at the withers and can weigh 650/620 kg (approx). The fertility ratio among the Tori stallions is also very high, with 86 foals per 100 mares.
The Tori horse is used generally for sport and hobby related activities. The Tori horses are kept because of their tractive power also. The Tori horses are well adapted to local conditions, longevity, and strong constitution.
