The Wielkopolski is a warm blood horse and one of Poland’s most popular and important horses. The horse has great performance capabilities for an event and competitions. The closes relative of the Wielkopolski is the Trakehner. It has been less popularized because the Polish breeders lacked the marketing abilities compared to the breeders in central and the Western Europe. However just because they are not popular the superior qualities of the horse breed cannot be written off and they have the same breeding skills of any other superior horse found elsewhere in Europe. Today many European breeders have realized its potential and are trying to increase the breed’s population.
In the ancient days the Hungarians were considered to have a age long tradition of breeding superior quality horses and similarly even the Polish had a tradition only less spoken off. The Polish preferred the Arab horses for breeding and their cavalry and this is how the Arab horses found their way into Poland. That is how the Wielkopolski though not an Arabian horse does have the blood line of the superior Arab horses and also their sound mind through genes. Though the polish find it difficult to accept, the Wielkopolski bears strong resemblances with the Arabian horses.
The Wielkopolski is a final result of a combination of two superior breeds and is a dual purpose horse accordingly. It bears handsome and proportionate looks and trots well. It is ideal for long walks and stands about 16 hands tall. It is found in all solid colors such as black, brown and chestnut. The heavier horses in the Wielkopolski breed are very active displaying enormous power along with a well combined good temperament. The lighter horses are ideal for agricultural purposes and can be used as farm animals. The Wielkopolski also displays excellent jumping qualities which makes it an ideal dressage horse.
