The Yanqi horse breed actually originated in China in the North Xingjian that was mostly agricultural in nature. China is a huge country with a lot of agricultural land and all kinds of animals were used for working on the farms including horses. The Xingjian horse originated here and was predominantly used in agriculture by the Chinese for its superior qualities like good temperament and strong stamina. It is often wondered by experts that how this horse managed to have so much stamina that is capable of working even in harsh weather conditions. Its survival instincts were almost unmatched to any other.
The Yanqi horse derives its superior qualities like stamina from the Mongolian breeds and these horses were mainly bred through Don breeding. Don breeding usually creates horses that have extreme amounts of stamina to withstand any amount of workload and harsh weather conditions. There are several Russian and European breeds that have been obtained through Don breeding and are widely used even today. Also the horses obtained as a result of this kind of breeding exhibit many stallions like features and mentality. This has not been the case with the Yanqi which had its own individual characteristics. These horses are actually pony sized and breed that can be used for riding and even trotting. They share many qualities of the draft horses.
Among all the horses the Chinese breeds were known lesser because they were not much exposed to cross breeding. However there were similar horses found in Russia and India and a lot of features could be compared with the Chinese horses. The Yanqi however was not much known in any other part of the world or china itself other than Xingjian. China is a very big country to compare with any other country and it is not quite possible to compare one breed of horse from one part to another breed from a different part of china. Also these lands were mainly deserts.
