The Yonaguni was first found in Japan in the Southwest islands of the country. Though the origins of the horse were not clear there were only seventy five horses of the breed found in these islands in the year 1996. They were found on the ranches of the Yaeyama Island. The horses that came from Japan could be divided into two big groups. One is the small set of horses that came from yonaguni and the other is the large horses that came from the Hokkaido region. As you can infer from above the Yonaguni is a smallish breed and also rare breed.
The Yonaguni comes in chestnut mostly and since right from the beginning very few specimens of this breed were found the chestnut color was predominant in them. The have a big head and relatively big eyes with a short and thick neck. The have along back and the tail is set high on their rump. They also have hard hooves and long ones. More than a horse it has pony like qualities and their nature also matches with the pony which is gentle and an enduring temperament. However professors in Japan believe that these horse can be as much as 2000 years old because that is when smaller horses were introduced in Japan.
In ancient days in Japan every household had a horse and were used mainly for transportation and other smaller agricultural activities. In 1939 during warfare the larger breeds were introduced in Japan to meet the needs of warfare. However since the Yonaguni which already existed on the island were too small to be bred with the larger ones they were completely excluded from breeding with the larger breeds right from the start. That is why gradually the breed declined in population. Today the horse is considered as a cultural asset.
