The Zaniskari Pony is a popular breed found in the northern parts of India in places like Leh, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. It is a beautiful horse which come in reddish and coppery colors and actually in the current day situation has been exposed to cross breeding with the non descript ponies. The animal husbandry department of Jammu is putting in some efforts to preserve the original lineage of the horse as it is an ancient horse. These ponies were mainly used by the local people for tourism purposes to take people on horse backs to tour the mountainous area.
This tells us that these horses have great workmanship qualities and a sweet temperament which is ideal to work them in agriculture and even just riding. These are mid sized horses and can carry heavy loads at high altitudes. They can also run fairly fast. These horses are also used by the monasteries surrounding the Leh area because people cannot afford much transport in these areas even today. It is also difficult to find decent and fast transportation in these high altitudes of the Himalayan regions. In most cases horses have lost popularity because of the increase in technology and farm vehicles replacing the horses. However the same is not the case with the Zaniskari Pony as even today the horse is used for agriculture and transportation in these parts.
Many horse experts now paying attention to the cross breeding phenomenon which is rampant in these parts and it is also feared that we would lose another good work horse to cross breeding. The original Zaniskari Pony has to be preserved because it displays excellent work horse qualities. It is a very rugged pony that can survive even harsh conditions and can manage to work in them.
